It is harder to know which is the oldest form of stress relief – massage or meditation. I use massage with many of my clients in my therapy practice in York for stress relief. I believe the oldest form of stress relief may well be massage – I can well imagine our ancestors instinctively massaging each other for comfort even before they had discovered language. However, meditation is also a very natural state to enter into. Some studies have shown it to be more effective than anti-depressants in combating depression. Meditation has also been shown to reduce blood pressure. It is a highly effective form of intervention which can be used virtually anywhere.
